How to Import a Car from Dubai to Spain

Why CO₂ emissions can make or break the deal in Spain, and what to verify for each vehicle.

By the Dubai Car Import editorial team · Reviewed

Short answer: customs normally charges 10% duty and 21% import VAT. At first registration Spain adds the registration tax (IEDMT) based on CO₂ — up to 14.75% for high-emission cars. Cars without valid EU type approval need an individual homologation and ITV before DGT registration.

Why CO₂ matters most in Spain

CO₂ (WLTP)IEDMT rate (mainland & Balearics)
Below 120 g/km0%
120 to under 1604.75%
160 to under 2009.75%

Many large SUVs and sports cars fall in the top band. On a six-figure car, that can remove the entire price advantage. Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla have different rules.

Process

  1. Compare with Spanish listings for the same version.
  2. Inspect in the UAE.
  3. Buy and deregister for export; collect documents.
  4. Ship to an EU port such as Valencia, Barcelona or Algeciras, depending on the carrier.
  5. Customs (DUA): duty and VAT via a customs agent.
  6. Homologation and ITV: individual approval through a technical service if needed.
  7. IEDMT (modelo 576) and DGT registration.

Questions

Does registration tax apply to an imported used car in Spain?

Yes. The first registration in Spain triggers the IEDMT, based on CO₂ emissions: 0% below 120 g/km, 4.75%, 9.75% and 14.75% from 200 g/km in mainland Spain and the Balearics. For used cars, the tax base uses the tax authority's valuation tables.
